Tai Ahoms celebrate May Ji Bihu in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA, Jan 15 – The Tinsukia district is the confluence of various traditions and cultures of different ethnic groups like Morans, Mottocks, Singphows, Hajongs, Deoris, Tai Ahoms, Tai Khamtis, Tai Phakeys, Misings, Sonowal Kacharis, etc, from time immemorial.

Though these ethnic groups adopted some common traditions and cultures by mingling with each other as time passed, some groups still continued to stick to their traditional culture.

Tai Ahoms, the ethnic group that ruled Assam for about 600 years after Siu-Ka-Pha established the reign, also have their separate tradition and culture that are being observed and celebrated according to their own customs.

The Magh or Bhogali Bihu used to be observed as the May Ji Bihu by the Ahoms in many part of the State, especially in upper Assam.

In Tinsukia district, though the population of Tai Ahoms is not big but in some areas the tradition is still observed today.

The people of this ethnic group living in and around Tinsukia celebrate their traditional May Ji Bihu at Morankari village under Itakhooli gaon panchayat on January 14 according to their tradition.

May Ji Bihu is considered a post-harvest festival dedicated to the god of fire. In Tai language ‘May’ means worship and ‘Ji’ means fire, or structure of bamboo or like materials made for lighting with fire.

The traditional community feast or Bhoj used to take place after the worship of fire by lighting the ‘Ji’ or ‘May Ji’.( from THE ASSAM TRIBUNE 16.01.2010)
