Originally , the Khasi people named this Falls,Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew (Three steps Water Falls) because the Water Falls into Three Steps . When British people came & found this Water Falls,they named it 'Elephant Falls' because on the left-side of the Falls there was a rock resembled the Elephant but this Rock was destroyed by the earthquake in 1897.
